Sesame Street PVC Figures

From the very start of Sesame Street's broadcast history back in November 1969 there have been many, many, many Sesame Street PVC figures produced by many, many different toy companies. Some of these companies include Child Guidance/Questor, Tara Toy Corp, Applause, Illco, Tyco, and Comics Spain, though there are several others. As such, identifying these figures can be quite a confusing and daunting task. Even the Muppet Wiki site, which I think is quite awesome and proved extremely helpful while compiling this page, has occasionally misidentified some PVC figures.

Over time, I'm going to collect what information I can about these tiny figures and include it all here in one place because, well, I'm just obsessed enough with these little Sesame "bonhommes" to do so! Once completed, I'm hoping this page will serve as a reference to help collectors properly identify these numerous, awesome little Sesame dudes.

As I'm just getting started, this page is still a work in progress and is by no means a complete list. Okay, here we go.....

Questor / Child Horizons / Child Guidance, 1974
In the early 1970's the toy company Questor produced some of the first Sesame Street toys through a division of their company called Child Horizons, which marketed the toys under the brand name Child Guidance. Confused yet? Me too! I don't know why there are so many layers of corporate shenanigans involved, but the toys that resulted from this chaos were pretty awesome!

Not only did they produce my favourite Sesame toy hand puppets and finger puppets to date, but in 1974 we also got some nifty little PVC dudes to play with. Sold in boxed sets of three, these were the very first Sesame Street PVC figures that were available in North America. They were marketed as "Muppet Miniatures".

Three pack boxed set Box designed to be a wall with three doors and a sidewalk, figures attached with individual bubbles in each door.
Big Bird, mouth open, both hands flat against tummy, feet attached together with a space between legs, detail of feathers and proportioning of figure is much nicer than the Minikins and Bullyland figures mentioned below
Cookie Monster dark blue, upper half of figure is sculpted to look the same as the Child Guidance Cookie Monster finger puppet with the mouth in the same shape and both hands overlapping on his tummy
Oscar, bright green fur, light grey trash can with unevenly dented sides, both hands on edge of can, a very nicely detailed figure

Three pack boxed set Box designed to be a wall with three doors and a sidewalk, figures attached with individual bubbles in each door.
Bert, wearing solid green shirt, white collar, black pants and shoes, right hand flat on side of chin, mouth slightly open, left hand flat across tummy
Ernie wearing solid blue shirt, both hands flat against tummy, black pants and shoes, feet are sculpted too large for figure
Grover dark blue, head tilted to his left, left arm bent with hand on chest flat against figure, right hand behind back, legs together

Three pack boxed set Box designed to be a police car with three figures inside, all are in the same bubble.
Bert, wearing small blue police hat, solid green shirt, white collar, black pants and shoes, right hand holding a whistle to his mouth, mouth slightly open, left hand flat across tummy
Ernie wearing large blue police hat, solid blue shirt, both hands flat against tummy, holding a stop sign flat against figure in right hand, black pants and shoes, feet are sculpted too large for figure
Sherlock Hemlock figure is sculpted to look the same as the Child Guidance Sherlock Hemlock finger puppet, light green face, mouth slightly open, dark green outfit and hat, holding magnifying glass flat against figure in left hand, right arm flat against side, black pants and shoes

Here are two variations of the Betty Lou figure (wearing a fire fighter's hat and holding a hose) which can be found with pink or purple skin tone.

Three pack boxed set Box designed to be a fire truck with three figures inside, all are in the same bubble.
Betty Lou, pink face, wearing red fire hat and light blue dress, pig tails stick out from sides of head, holding a fire hose
Betty Lou, purple face, otherwise same as above figure
Big Bird, wearing red fire hat, mouth open, both hands flat against tummy holding red axe, feet attached together with a space between legs,
Grover dark blue, head tilted to his left, wearing red fire hat, both hands and arms flat on chest holding a ladder, legs together

Three pack boxed set "Hansel and Gretel" theme, box designed to be a house, figures attached with individual bubbles in a large window
Connie the Witch green face and hands, light blue dress, green hat and shawl, holding a yellow and black broom in left hand, right hand flat against body (this is the only PVC figure of this character to date)
Ernie as Hansel, wearing green overall shorts, white short sleeve shirt, arms flat against sides, legs together
Betty Lou as Gretel, wearing blue dress with straps at shoulders, white shirt, arms flat against sides

Three pack boxed set "Little Red Riding Hood" theme, box designed to be a house, figures attached with individual bubbles in a large window
Big Bad Wolf (box says "Herry Monster dressed as the Wolf"), light blue wolf, yellow nightgown with white trim, arms held up at sides of head (this is the only PVC figure of this character to date)
Grover as the Woodsman, head tilted to left, wearing red jacket and hat, both hands and arms flat on chest holding a brown stick, legs together
Prairie Dawn as Little Red Riding Hood, wearing red hood with cape, light blue dress, basket on right arm, both hands flat against tummy

"Abrete Sesamo" Three pack boxed set Box designed to be a wall with three doors and a sidewalk, figures attached with individual bubbles in each door. Sold in Spain.
Bert, wearing solid green shirt, white collar, black pants and shoes, right hand flat on centre of chest, left arm flat against side
Ernie wearing solid blue shirt, left hand flat against chest, right hand sculpted out to side, black pants and shoes
Grover dark blue, head tilted to his right, right arm bent with hand on chest flat against figure, right hand behind back, legs together (this figure is the mirror opposite of the North American version)

CBS Toys / Child Guidance, 1982-1983
At some point in the late 1970's CBC Toys acquired the Child Guidance brand name and used it to continue marketing Sesame Street toys.

Although these are not PVC figures I wanted to include them on this page for the sake of identifying them. Both are made out of hard plastic and are quite small. Cookie Monster was made in 1982 as part of a 25 piece train set with tracks, three train cars, a truck, and a small station house. The set also came with a similarly shaped figure of Big Bird.

Barkley the dog, making his first ever appearance as a figurine, was made in 1983 as part of the Sesame Street Firehouse playset. In addition to Barkley, the set came with figures of Big Bird and Grover both wearing red fire fighter hats and black coats. The set also came with the fire house and a fire truck.

Tara Toy Corp, 1980's
In the 1980s Tara Toys made two sets of six Sesame Street PVC figures featuring Bert, Ernie, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird and Grover. One set showed the characters with white hats and canes and the other set showed the characters doing different outdoor activities. Both sets are shown below. These were sold in North America.

All the figures in the set with the canes were marked "© Muppets Inc. / © CTW / Tara Toy / Made in China" with the exception of two: Bert  has all the markings except for "Tara Toy", and Oscar has no markings at all. All six figures in the second set have the same markings as noted above. These first two sets are not true PVC figures as they are made out of a harder type of plastic rather than the typical PVC rubber-like plastic.

There were variations for Cookie Monster in both of these sets. The Cookie Monster with the cane was made with a thin cane and a thick cane, and the Cookie Monster holding the toy boat can be found with large or small irises, shown below.

The above 12 Tara Toy figures were sold individually on bubble cards, as shown here with Big Bird, as well as loose in bins through dollar stores. There is no date on the packaging or the figures. At lease one boxed three pack set was also available with Big Bird playing tennis, Ernie holding the kite, and Cookie Monster holding the toy boat.

Here is the back view of the card showing the assortment of toys that were available along with these "Mini-Collectables". The top row shows the awesome series of poseable Sesame action figures, and the bottom row shows the finger puppets. Click on the image to see a larger view.

After the first two sets of PVC figures proved popular Tara Toy continued to produced additional figures. One series presented the characters playing musical instruments. Unlike the first 12 figures, this set was made with the usual PVC rubber-like plastic. The Cookie Monster figure from this set was produced in both in light blue and dark blue plastic. These were all sold individually on bubble cards. Muppet Wikki notes that all three of the Big Bird figures shown above (with cane, playing tennis, and with guitar) were also made with blue plastic to be figures of Pino from the Dutch version of Sesame Street, titled Sesamstraat.

Comics Spain, 1984
While in the 1980s Tara Toy and Applause produced the Sesame PVC figures that were sold in North America, in Europe the company Comics Spain produced a series of figures in 1984 based on the Spanish version of Sesame Street, Barrio Sesamo. The series included ten characters: Ernie, Bert, Cookie Monster, Oscar, Grover, Betty Lou, The Count, Sherlock Hemlock, and Spanish characters Espinete (a pink hedgehog costumed character) and Don Pimpon (a large brown monster costumed character who wears farmer overalls and a hat). Sherlock Hemlock from this set is an exceptionally nice figure.

Applause, mid 1980's to late 1990's
Of all the companies to produce Sesame Street PVC figures, the Applause toy company has produced the most extensive collection with the most diverse selection of characters and themes.

Shown above and below is the very first series of eight figures, produced in the mid 1980s. These are the most common of the Applause PVC figures. They still show up regularly at thrift stores and flea markets, and probably always will!

The set included:

Ernie playing baseball, with a glove and ball in a throwing pose
Bert with a baseball bat
Big Bird as a painter
Oscar holding an apple with a worm in it
Cookie Monster on a yellow skateboard (the wheels are moulded and do not move)
Super Grover flying. with clouds as the base of the figure (shown below)
Count holding three balloons (shown above)
Snuffleupagus wearing a red scarf and blue hat (shown above)

The set of eight figures was promoted and sold as special collectors items through Shell gas stations and convenience stores the same way McDonalds restaurants sells toys.

I remember the 7-11 corner store near my house had a large cardboard sign in front of their store advertising the figures. It had a giant picture of the Big Bird figure on it against a solid black background. I asked at the store if I could have the sign when they were done with it and the fellow smiled cheerfully at me and said "Yes" which really made my day. As I waited for the poster I visited the store several times as I collected the entire set, all the while envisioning what that awesome advertisement would look like on the wall in my room. Then one day when I went to the store the poster was gone, they had thrown it out! Darn it! That was a real bummer! Though I was still thankful that I now had eight brand new, awesome little Sesame dudes to play with! :)

Here is the Super Grover figure in the original baggie. This is how each of the eight figures in the Shell/Sesame promotion were packaged. The baggie just had the Sesame Street logo, there were no individual character names or any mention of Shell.

These original eight Applause Sesame PVC figurers were very popular toys in their time, so much so that Applause continued to produce new Sesame PVC figures for at least a full decade, through to the mid 1990s. As a result, Applause was the first company to market toys based on Elmo in the late 1980's. To some degree, during the mid to late 1990's when Elmo's popularity was at it's peak he replaced Grover in toy lines such as PVC figures. When other characters such as Rosita and Zoe were added to the Sesame cast in the early 1990s, Applause was quick to market them as well. As such if we divide the PVC figures into themes it may be possible to determine when a particular set was made based on which characters were included in the collection...

This set shows the characters Snuffleupagus, Big Bird, Cookie Monster and Rosita at the beach. The Rosita figure is marked 1993, but the others don't have a date with their markings so they may be earlier figures. I'm only assuming that they were all made in 1993 with the Rosita figure. In any case, this is likely the first PVC figure of Rosita ever to have been made. I've shown a side view of the figure below to show it was made with the wings which the character no longer has.

Beach theme from 1993 or early 1990's

Snuffleupagus with blue and pink stripped towel on his back holding a red ball with his trunk
Cookie Monster wearing red shorts with a yellow bucket of shells, holding a shell to his ear

Beach theme, bendy figures early 1990's
These four figures are actually bendy figures rather than PVC figures, but I'm including them here as they are often mistaken for being standard PVC figures due to their small size. I always thought this was an interesting set, and picked them up brand new from the store when I was a kid! They were sold loose in a bin through greeting card gift shops.
Big Bird with an orange life jacket
Elmo with tire tube around his waist
Ernie wearing a striped bathing suit
Bert with swimming flippers

Snuffleupagus, no date on figure, from the early 1990's

I don't know what tile, if any, Applause may have used for this collection, however it seems fitting to use the title of the popular Sesame song for this series. Applause also made a finger puppet series based on the designs for this set, as well as the Ernie drinking straw PVC figure shown above (missing the straw).

The Two-Headed Monster figure by Tyco from the late 1990's or early 2000's. This figure was made with a hard plastic rather than the typical PVC rubber-like material. It's marked Tyco on the bottom of the left foot. To my knowledge this is the only figurine of this character to date.

These two figures of Betty Lou and Cookie Monster are dated 1990 and were originally sold with the Tyco Super Blocks playset. Both are hollow and made out of soft rubber similar to a squeeze toy. They are slightly larger than a PVC figure. The bottoms of the figures are shown below.

Illco, 1980s or 1990's

These PVC figures of Cookie Monster, Ernie and Oscar, were made by Illco and were originally sold with a boxed playset of 123 Sesame Street. There's no manufacturer marking on the figures. The only marking are "© JHP" which is Jim Henson Productions, and "China", which is where they were made. Big Bird was also included in the set. I suspect these figures were made in the 1980's or 1990's, but am leaning more to the 1990's so I included them here.

These two PVC figures of Zoe and Cookie Monster have the same type of markings as the above Illco figures, which suggests that they were made by the same company. I haven't yet been able to figure out what playset these two were originally sold with. They're also made with the same type of hard PVC or plastic material as the others and have similar bright glossy colours.

These Cookie Monster and Ernie PVC figure were made by Illco. They were originally sold in a boxed Circus playset that included eight PVC figures: Cookie Monster, Big Bird as a Ringleader, Ernie as a Clown, and four circus animals (lion, tiger, horse and a seal).

This Grover PVC figure is 4 inches tall and a fridge magnet. It's marked "Jim Henson Productions Inc." on the back, with no date or a manufacturer mark so it's a mystery to me who made it and when. I suspect it's from the 1980's, but it may also be from the 1970's.

This PVC figure of Big Bird is dated 1984 and was originally the hood ornament on a toy that resembled the front section of a car with a steering wheel. The purpose of the toy was to allow kids to pretend that they were driving a car, with different functions such as a horn and a lever for kids to operate. I don't recall what company made the toy. Big Bird's irises are painted light blue instead of black.

This small Sesame Street lamp post was included with one of the many Sesame Street playsets that have been offered over the years. Unfortunately it does not have any markings so I have no idea what company made this, or what set it belongs to. It is definitely not the one that came with the Fisher-Price Little People playset, Child Guidance playset, Illco playset, or the Tyco Super Blocks playset.
